How Intentional Design Impacts Mental Health (And Your Success)

It's been a busy week at Home Hideouts. Whilst I have known for a while that I wanted to make the brand more personal, I wasn't 100% sure how or what was appropriate. However, I realised that a lot of my personal journey is so intrinsically tied to my home environment that it feels the right time to evolve it's direction and incorporate some of the wellness, mindfulness and self-care which I have found so important on my own solo journey into my 40s. Therefore, going forward, expect to see lots of tips, hacks and resources which nurture whilst give you a home décor hit.

Our homes are more than just places to live; they are environments that can significantly influence our mood, productivity, and overall mental health. As a whole, we’re spending increasing amounts of time in our living spaces now, so intentional design becomes even more essential for creating a nurturing atmosphere. In this post, we’ll explore how thoughtful home décor choices can enhance your well-being and help to promote a positive mindset.

1. The Power of Colour

Colours have a profound effect on our emotions and psychology. For instance, blues and greens are often associated with calmness and relaxation, while yellows can evoke feelings of happiness and energy. By choosing a colour palette that resonates with your desired mood, you can create a space that feels more uplifting and balanced.

Tip: Consider painting an accent wall in a soothing colour or incorporating colourful décor items that inspire positivity.

2. Decluttering for Clarity

A cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind. When our environment is disorganised, it can contribute to feelings of stress and overwhelm. By decluttering your home, you not only create a more visually appealing space but also naturally promote mental clarity and focus.

Tip: Take some time to sort through your belongings. Keep items that bring you joy and let go of those that no longer serve you. As William Morris famously said, have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. You can buy wooden and wicker draws to naturally organise and hideaway pens and papers whilst giving your space some personality.

3. Bringing Nature Indoors

Integrating natural elements into your home can have a calming effect and improve air quality. Studies have shown that plants can reduce stress, enhance mood, and even increase productivity. Whether it’s a few potted plants or natural materials like wood and stone, bringing the outdoors in can create a serene atmosphere.

Tip: Start with easy-to-care-for plants like succulents or snake plants, which can thrive in various conditions.

4. Creating Break Out Spaces

Designing cosy areas within your home allows you to carve out places specifically for relaxation and self-care. Whether it’s a reading corner with soft pillows or a meditation space on the floor which is ready for you each morning, having dedicated areas can encourage mindfulness routines that provide a retreat from daily stressors.

Tip: Invest in comfortable seating (we have some great ones in store right now), soft lighting, and inviting textiles to make your cosy spaces even more inviting.

5. Personal Touches

Your home should a fun place and be an opportunity for creativity which reflects your personality and journey. Incorporating personal items - like artwork, photos, or sentimental bits and pieces - can create a sense of belonging and comfort. When your space tells your story, it can foster positive emotions and become a fun extension of your personality.

Tip:  Curate a gallery wall with your favourite photos or artwork that inspires you.

Remember, everyone is different so find what works for you and stick to that. Follow your natural intuition whilst sourcing only items that you love and you can't go wrong in creating an inspiring working space.
